Caracas, Venezuela

Caracas Venezuela

Caracas, in northern Venezuela, is the country’s capital and largest city. The city is ringed by majestic mountains dominated by Mount Ávila, an impressive peak that separates Caracas from the Caribbean Sea. Lush green slopes rise high above the city and are visible from almost everywhere. Plaza Bolívar lies at the heart of the historic centre, with an equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar at its centre. Around the square you’ll find several historic buildings and fine examples of colonial architecture. The Cathedral stands in the north‑eastern corner of Plaza Bolívar, with many side chapels and notable religious art. Casa Amarilla, a handsome colonial mansion, is on the west side of the square, while the Museo Sacro de Caracas and the Consejo Municipal are also nearby. A few blocks north of Plaza Bolívar is the Panteón Nacional, final resting place of Venezuela’s Liberator, Simón Bolívar. La Casa Natal de Simón Bolívar, his birthplace, is another major attraction in the historic centre. Along the northern edge of Caracas stretches the Cordillera de Ávila mountain range, home to a national park with numerous hiking trails and a rich variety of wildlife. Set in a spectacular natural amphitheatre, Caracas is a fascinating city full of outstanding art, great food and lively nightlife, and it’s an ideal base for exploring the beauty, wilderness and hidden corners of Venezuela.
