Ilulissat Greenland

Ilulissat, formerly known as Jakobshavn or Jacobshaven, is the main town and administrative centre of the Avannaata municipality in western Greenland, about 350 km (220 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. With a population of 4,541 in 2013, it is Greenland’s third-largest town, after Nuuk and Sisimiut. There are almost as many sled dogs as people living in the town. The name Ilulissat is the Kalaallisut word for “icebergs” (Danish: Isbjerge). The nearby Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has made the town Greenland’s most popular tourist destination. Tourism is now the main industry in Ilulissat. The town sits beside the Ilulissat Icefjord, where huge icebergs calve from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere.
