Purmamarca, Argentina

Purmamarca Argentina

Purmamarca is a village in the Tumbaya Department of Jujuy Province in north-west Argentina. In 2003, UNESCO declared the Quebrada de Humahuaca a World Heritage Site, which has led to increased interest in the area from both Irish and international visitors. The town’s colonial architecture and the striking Cerro de los Siete Colores (Hill of Seven Colours), along with a modest but growing range of places to stay, make Purmamarca an appealing stop for those travelling through Argentina’s north. Most local livelihoods are now tied to tourism. These range from craft production – with handmade goods sold at the market on the main square – to accommodation and guided excursions. Key attractions include the Cerro de los Siete Colores and the town’s handicraft market. Purmamarca is also a popular base for walks such as the Paseo de los Colorados and along the Purmamarca River, as well as tours to the Salinas Grandes salt flats, the Huachichocana archaeological site and the Laguna de Guayatayoc, known for its pink flamingos and wild geese.
