Copán Honduras

Copán is an archaeological site of the Maya civilisation in the Copán Department of western Honduras, close to the Guatemalan border. The city lay at the far south‑eastern edge of the Mesoamerican cultural region, on the frontier with the Isthmo‑Colombian region. Its historical record covers most of the Classic period and has been reconstructed in detail by archaeologists and epigraphers. The Copán Ruins are the highlight of Copán. While fairly extensive, they are not as vast as Tikal in Guatemala or Teotihuacan in Mexico, but there is more sculpture here than in any other pre‑Columbian city. The ruins are renowned for their carved stelae of ancient rulers and for their well‑preserved hieroglyphics, including the famous hieroglyphic stairway. Within the archaeological park there is also an excellent Mayan museum (entry about US$7 per person) with a reconstructed temple and outstanding artefacts. It’s best to arrive when the site opens at 8am, as it becomes very hot by midday. You can hire a guide at the entrance to the ruins for about US$25, shared between however many people you can gather. Cesar (in his 30s, clear accented English) and Antonio (in his 60s, few teeth, excellent English) are recommended if they are available. Beyond the ruins, the surrounding countryside is very appealing. The slow‑paced local life is relaxed, and farming of maize, beans, coffee and tobacco is the main occupation.
