Derry United Kingdom

Derry, officially known as Londonderry, is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest on the island of Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name Daire (modern Irish: Doire [ˈd̪ˠɛɾʲə]), which means "oak grove". In 1613, the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I, adding the "London" prefix to acknowledge the funding of its construction by the London guilds. While the city is more commonly referred to as Derry in everyday conversation, Londonderry is also frequently used and remains its official name. The historic walled city is situated on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is crossed by two road bridges and one footbridge. Today, the city spans both banks, with Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east. According to the 2001 Census, the city's population was 83,652, while the Derry Urban Area had a population of 90,736. The district governed by the Derry City and Strabane District Council includes both Londonderry Port and the City of Derry Airport.
