Information about the area
Nizwa, OmanNizwa is the biggest city in the Ad Dakhiliyah Region in Oman and was once the capital of Oman proper. Nizwa is approximately 140 km (1.5 hours) away from Muscat. The population is estimated to be around 72,000 people, including the two areas of Burkat Al Mooz and Al Jabel Al Akhdar.
Nizwa is one of the oldest cities in Oman and was formerly a hub for trade, religion, education, and art. Its Jama (grand mosque) used to be a center for Islamic learning. Nizwa gained its significance because it has been a crucial meeting point at the base of the Western Hajar Mountains. Surrounded by a lush expanse of date palms, it is strategically situated at the junction of routes connecting the interior with Muscat and the lower parts of Dhofar, thereby serving as a link for a large portion of the country. Today, Nizwa is a diverse and prosperous city with various agricultural, historical, and recreational aspects. Nizwa is a hub for date growing and serves as the marketplace for the area.
